In search of the very best coquito maker

The salutations flowed as easily as the silken beverage when Soulfrito Nuevo and the International Coquito Federation sponsored a contest to crown the Big Apple’s best coquito maker with the Brooklyn qualifying round hosted by United Puerto Rican Organization of Sunset Park (UPROSE).

Six aficonados of the festive, eggnog-like libation made with rum competed for bragging rights as the city’s best Coquito maker in order to advance to the Super Sabado Coquito Masters Final on Lower East Side in Manhattan, December 19.

Popular Latino media personality Malin Falu was the special judge at the community-based organization’s headquarters, 166A 22nd Street, where she helped select as the Brooklyn qualifiers Prospect Heights entrant Marta Egea, who made a chocolate-flavored coquito, and Bushwick’s Frank Estrada, who concocted a traditional version.

The cocktail is a holiday staple in Puerto Rican communities across the world.
