Into space
Borough middle-schooler Selena Ishikawa won a Junior Scientist award in the Genes in Space Competition. Students in grades seven to 12 are charged with the challenge to design DNA experiments that address challenges in space exploration.
Selena studies at Park Slope Collegiate and worked with Ruby Alison of the Clinton School for Writers in Union Square.
Their experiment tested whether the body plan of a zebrafish is impacted if its embryo is developed in microgravity. Selena and Ruby entered the competition as part of the American Museum of Natural History’s Lang Science Program, a seven-year educational initiative that incorporates hands-on learning and scientific exploration under the mentorship of museum educators and scientists.
Selena and Ruby’s entry was among the top five out of 145 proposals submitted in their category.
