Dyker Heights
When Madeleine Brennan became principal of IS 201, John F. Kennedy was president, the Los Angeles Dodgers were the World Series champs, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was named Time Magazine’s Man of the Year.
That was 50 years ago! Dress codes may have changed since then, and hip-hop has nudged out rock and roll, but Principal Brennan’s devotion to her students has remained everlasting.
There were plenty of misty eyes in the room when our pal Madeleine stepped down on June 25, after an illustrious career that put her in a class of her own, as the city’s longest-serving principal on record.
Students, teachers, and parents were joined by state Sen. Marty Golden (R-Bay Ridge), the senator’s chief-of-staff John Quaglione, and district superintendent Karina Costantino, all of whom bid a fond farewell to the scholastic superwoman, who is retiring after a lifetime of service to Brooklyn.
Madeleine led her students with a smile, a firm hand, and a determination to give them the best education possible, recalled her supporters.
“Mrs. Brennan is a legend in education, in Dyker Heights and in New York City, and she will always be remembered as a woman who devoted so much energy and time into making IS 201 the best it could be,” said Golden. “I salute her and thank her for all she has done to shape our community, our city and our state.”
Standing O wishes the awesome educator the very best, as she turns another new and exciting chapter in her life.
