IS 278’s Builder’s Club supports UNICEF

The Marine Park Intermediate School 278’s Builders Club, inits efforts to help those in need, both at home and abroad, helped to collect money for UNICEF’s Project Uruguay. The initiative was of special interest to Spanish teacher Maria Pastorini, who is from Uruguay and was able to make cross cultural connections for the students, thus encouraging more involvement.

Uruguay is currently in the throes of severe economic and social crises, and UNICEF, according to its website, is helping to promote “citizen mobilization to cope with the situation and ensure that children’s and adolescents’ rights would not be sacrificed.”

To help raise funds, each homeroom class received a bright orange box and was encouraged by members to give generously to this cause. Many members contributed their own money as well.

Kieran has been faculty advisor for the club, sponsored by Parkway East Kiwanis, since its inception four years ago at the school, 1925 Stuart Street in the Marine Park section of Brooklyn.

Upcoming Builders Club events include filling holiday stockings for troops overseas and a holiday toy drive to benefit military families from the Fort Hamilton Army Base.
