Aloha joy!
PS 811 turned into a Hawaiian paradise during the Sheepshead Bay school’s Luau and Arts Festival on May 7. Organizers planned the day as a way for the school’s special-needs students to bond with friends and family — and kids had a blast, one mom said.
“They did a lot of playing,” said East New Yorker Quissy Ortega, who brought 15-year-old PS 811 student Jean and his brother Jeremy. “They ate a lot, they ran around, they were dancing, they played basketball.”
Kids snacked on ham and pineapple and got to do arts and crafts, too. One student used the opportunity to make a card for her mom — just in time for Mother’s Day, the proud progenitor said.
“It was very pretty,” said mom Abygail Ortiz.
The school does a wonderful job bringing families together, Ortiz said.
“The school is always having events, which always pulls the family in,” she said. “We’re always welcome there. And it’s a quality program with quality teachers who are invested in their students.”
