There’s a new sheriff in town!
Get ready Bay Ridge — this column has a new reporter at the helm, and I solemnly swear to bring you all things nightlife in our beloved nabe. And word of my new reign as a columnist is not the only thing sweeping the Ridge — this weekend the Europeans are invading!
The 240th anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn is coming next weekend, and this week we find the Ridge packed with events that showcase European culture. Coincidence? Or are those dastardly Continental types trying to infiltrate and disrupt the re-enactments of our glorious retreat 240 years ago? We advise you head out to all of these events to keep an eye on the interlopers.
On Saturday, you can savor the gory poetics of that British bard William Shakespeare at the Narrows Botanical Gardens (Shore Road between Bay Ridge Avenue and 72nd Street). During the John Stillwaggon and Act Out! Productions performance of “Julius Caesar,” the grass is the stage and passersby are all part of the show. If you miss it on Saturday you, have another chance to witness Caesar’s grisly demise on Sunday. Each performance starts at 7 pm.
When you have had your fill of Shakespearian quotation on Sunday night, take a stroll along Shore Road up toward the Wicked Monk (9510 Third Ave. between 95th and 96th streets) to wet your whistle and catch a performance by the Norwegian coastline kings Lords of the Fjords. The two-man acoustic act will rock out from 4 pm to 7 pm.
And to make sure those mischievous blokes from the Emerald Isle behave themselves while in the Ridge, skip down to Shore Road Park (at 79th Street and Shore Road) on Tuesday for Irish night, where Celtic rockers the Canny Brothers and the Clann Eireann Pipe Band will play starting at 7 pm.
