The latest adventure for the Builders Club at Marine Park Intermediate School 278, 1925 Stuart Street, has been to raise money in order to buy a goat through Heifer International, which provides employment opportunities and education to people in developing areas, including the United States.
The gift of a goat from the students will be sent to an underdeveloped area, where it will help provide food in the form of milk and cheese to a family in need. Surplus food can then be sold to provide added income.
The Builders Club chose Heifer as a project after reading information provided by Faculty Adviser Regina Kieran. Once the members explained their project and received the go ahead from Principal Debra Garofalo, their work really began.
Builders Club members traveled throughout the school, educating both staff and students about Heifer International and the work that it does around the world. In less than two weeks, they had helped to raise enough money not only for a goat, but, with the help of their sponsors, Parkway East Kiwanis, they were able to purchase two flocks of chicks for Heifer International as well.
The winning name selected for the goat was Baaaab, suggested by student Victoria Sladky. She received a small plush goat as a thank you gift for participating.
