Athletic oldsters kicked off the Parks Department’s Senior Games with a Brooklyn torch run. Seniors snaked from Green Point to Bay Ridge to Brownsville in a heart-pumping tour of the borough that exposed even lifelong-Brooklynites to changes in the nabes, said one torch bearer.
“You got to see how one neighborhood changes to the next and the cultural diversity in people coming out to cheer us on, ” said 65-year-old Flatbush resident Leroy Cummings, who ran the entire length of race. “It was very, very exciting.”
Runners blazed a trail through Brooklyn starting bright and early on May 8th at 7 am in Green Point’s McCarren Play Center. Seniors burned rubber through Downtown, Red Hook, Sunset Park, and wrapped up the first leg of their journey at Bay Ridge’s Fort Hamilton Senior Recreation Center all by 10:30 am.
On May 9, they charged back through Bay Ridge and Sunset Park and hooked east at Park Slope where they sped on to Crown Heights and crossed the finish line in Brownsville.
The run kicked off the second annual Senior Games taking place across the borough from May 9 to 12 with competitions in basketball, swimming, and bowling, and less traditional sports such as pickleball (which is a game), table tennis, and, of course, board games.
