A string of carjackings has Marine Park residents on alert.
“People should be aware so they can be more careful,” local resident Mary Costello said at last week’s meeting of the Marine Park Civic Association. “I’m more aware. I make sure my car is locked, my windows are locked.”
News of the carjackings has spread throughout the neighborhood.
“I heard there were seven or nine,” said Marine Park Civic President Greg Borruso.
“A carjacking took place right across from my store in the middle of the day,” said Borruso, who owns a hardware store on Avenue S.
Cops have made one arrest in the carjacking cases.
They believe Nemar Salmon, 24, is allegedly responsible for at least six carjackings in recent weeks. He was apprehended after allegedly pulling a 73-year-old woman out of her Mercedes-Benz on September 3.
The incident occurred around 10 a.m. on Avenue S near East 34th Street.
While the Mercedes was not recovered, most of the cars Salmon is accused of stealing were found abandoned in Mill Basin.
Carjacking incidents have died down since the arrest, explained P.O. Mike Boylan, the 63rd Precinct’s community affairs officer.
Cops encourage drivers to be extra careful when entering and exiting their vehicles.
“People have to be aware of their surroundings,” Boylan said.
When driving, practice common sense behaviors, such as keeping doors locked and windows closed.
