Local kids got a taste of what the golfing world has to offer at Marine Park Golf Course on July 9 thanks to free lessons offered by the City Parks Foundation.

A diverse crowd of potential putters turned out for the event, according to one of the instructors.

“It’s the perfect snapshot of what New York City is,” said golf instructor Tiffany Nelson. “Boys and girls of all ages, religions, races, and languages — it is New York in a nutshell.”

Nelson teaches lessons on golf basics on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at the public course to kids aged 6 through 17. After a month worth of lessons, the tiny golfers get to play real games against one another.

The City Parks Foundation offers similar programs like this in parks all across the city to enrich the community. The course itself hopes that kids will be able to convince their parents to pick up the club as well.

“Most parents become interested if their kids are,” Nelson said. “It can be a family outing.”

But for Nelson, this isn’t work to her at all, because she enjoys herself way too much.

“I love, love, love what I do,” she said. “Showing people this sport that they never even thought of.”
