Lop it off.
That’s the order coming from the Department of Buildings this week in response to a building on Kimball Street that has been in violation of zoning regulations for almost five years.
A criminal violation issued by the Department of Buildings means that the top floor of the 2232 Kimball Street will have to be dismantled.
“This removal has been a priority of so many who have been forced to deal with this eyesore, in violation of zoning regulations, and it is about time that it will finally be coming down,” State Senator Martin Golden said.
Efforts to bring the vacant building located between Avenue U and Avenue V into code have gone on so long that some in Marine Park are skeptical that the top floor of 2232 Kimball Street will actually be removed.
“We’ve been waiting for this for years,” said Marine Park Civic Association President Greg Borruso. “Until I see the bricks come down, I have a hard time believing it’s going to happen.”
Permits have already been filed with the New York City Department of Buildings to begin the removal of the floor in violation, according to Golden.
“Zoning laws are to be adhered to by all, not just some, and my office will continue to monitor this project until it is within regulation,” he said.
Five active DOB violations and a stop-work order currently exist on the property.
“I think the DOB has to tie up all their loose ends with all the problems they’re having in Manhattan,” Borruso said. “They’re finally taking the initiative.”
There are “plenty more” non-conforming buildings throughout the community that the DOB needs to take a closer look at, according to the Marine Park Civic Association president – but he says 2232 Kimball Street “is one of the most severe.”
Golden is urging residents who believe there are problems in their neighborhood to contact his office.
“Any residents with concerns related to properties they feel are being constructed above and beyond the limits should contact my office in order to notify the Buildings Department,” he said. Maintaining the character of our community is vital to maintaining the excellent quality of live we have come to enjoy.”
