Terry Boddie
and Nicole Awai’s exhibit "Panyard" is on view now
at the Five Myles gallery [558 St. Johns Place, (718) 783-4438]
through Sept. 22. (Left to right) Boddie and Awai are pictured
in front of "Gayelle," or stick fighting arena, one
of the features of their multimedia installation which evokes
the physical and psychological space of the panyard, the incubator
of the Caribbean carnival.
The panyard, where the steel drum musicians rehearse, has always
represented an arena of resistance as well as celebration, according
to Hanne Tierney, curator at Five Myles. The artists’ minimal
approach is a deliberate attempt, she says, to draw the viewer
into a meditation on the history of the dynamic West Indian parade
celebrated every Labor Day on Eastern Parkway.
Gallery hours are Thursday through Saturday, 1 pm to 6 pm, or
by appointment.
