Leaf & Circle, an innovative exhibit by artist Jessica Baker at the Prospect Park Audubon Center, now to May 26.
“Leaf & Circle” is the culmination of an ambitious project begun in the fall of 2007, during which artist Jessica Baker collected leaves from Prospect Park and locations throughout Brooklyn. Her initial idea to print directly on the leaves is a natural outgrowth from her work for many years as a printmaker, and in particular from her interest in the powerful archetype of the circle.
The combination of leaves and circles has resulted in this unique series of single and multiple leaf print arrangements, as well as leaf arrangements with no prints on them at all.
These will be displayed on the second floor of the landmark Prospect Park Beaux Arts Boathouse, which is home to the park’s Audubon Center.
What is compelling about Baker’s work is how she has utilized a resource from her immediate environment — leaves — that are free and plentiful and would otherwise be left to naturally decompose. The finished leaves have a limited “life span.” Dried leaves and flowers have been known to last for more than a 100 years, but eventually decomposition will set in.
The Audubon Center is open Thursdays through Sundays, 12-5 p.m. Admission is free. Reach the Audubon Center by enter Prospect Park at Lincoln Road and Ocean Avenue or at Flatbush Avenue and Empire Boulevard.
