Long Island University’s Brooklyn campus
unveils its new Humanities Building Gallery on April 27 with
a reception for celebrated Brooklyn native Arthur Leipzig, a
photographer who taught at the Brooklyn and C.W. Post campuses
for 28 years.
The gallery will display five decades of Leipzig’s work in its
first show, "On Assignment." Among the 70 works will
be Leipzig’s 1948 photograph, "East River Divers" (pictured).
The professor emeritus will be on hand to sign copies of his
new book (also titled "On Assignment), while a silent auction
of four prints (donated by him) will be held to benefit the Arthur
Leipzig Scholarship Fund for media and visual arts students at
the university.
His new book, published by Long Island University Press, is being
released to coincide with the exhibition.
The subjects in the exhibition and in the book were photographed
from the 1940s through the 1980s while Leipzig was on assignment
for "Fortune," "Look," "Parade,"
"Natural History" and "The New York Times."
LIU’s new gallery is a 1,200-square-foot, glass-enclosed ellipse
in the Humanities Building lobby, designed by Mitchell/Giurgola
Architects. The gallery features a painted gypsum ceiling and
a unique display-mounting system.
The reception for "On Assignment" will take place April
27, from 4 pm to 7 pm, at the Humanities Building Gallery at
Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus, located near the intersection
of Flatbush and DeKalb avenues in Downtown Brooklyn.
The exhibition will be on display through May 27 and is free
and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday,
9 am to 6 pm, and weekends, from 11 am to 5 pm. For more information,
