All-star student scholars from Leon M. Goldstein High School for the Sciences will go head to head against Clara Barton High School in the first round of the 12th season of Cablevision’s “The Challenge,” an academic quiz show designed to test students’ knowledge in a Jeopardy-style format.
The first round match-up between Leon M. Goldstein High School for the Sciences, 1830 Shore Boulevard in the Manhattan Beach section of Brooklyn, and Clara Barton High School, 901 Classon Avenue in Prospect Heights, will air exclusively on News 12 Brooklyn at 6:30 & 9:30 p.m., January 31 & February 1, with encores airing February 7 & 8, also at 6:30 & 9:30 p.m.
“The Challenge,” hosted by News 12 Brooklyn anchor Heather McBride, can also be viewed anytime through the convenience of video on demand (VOD) through News 12 Interactive, located on iO TV channel 612.
In its 12th season, “The Challenge” includes schools and students from The Bronx and Brooklyn, Long Island, the Westchester/Hudson Valley region, New Jersey and Connecticut. More than 900 students representing 184 tri-state area high schools are participating this season. Teams are typically made up of students who are at the top of their class – academic all-stars who compete based on their knowledge of history, arts and literature, math and science.
Representing Leon M. Goldstein High School for the Sciences will be Jason Hernandez (team alternate), Anthony Khaykin, Alex Schukin (team captain), Yelena Shuster and David Vinnikov. The team’s academic advisor is Saran Panag.
Representing Clara Barton High School will be Christopher De La Cruz, Ayobami Fatade, Maggie Kung (team alternate), Danielle Stokel (team captain) and Mohammed Twam. The team’s academic advisors are Aida Nazario and Jasmaine Thorne-Vincent.
As this season of “The Challenge” progresses, schools will vie each week to continue on in the competition, which ultimately results in the best teams from each region facing off against each other next spring. Regional champions will then compete for the ultimate title, Tri-State Challenge Champion. The winning team in each region will receive $2,500 and go on to compete for $10,000 in the Tri-State Championship. Each student participating in the championship match will receive $500.
“The Challenge” is an important element of Cablevision’s education initiative, Power to Learn – the company’s ongoing commitment to the development and learning of students in the tri-state area. Earlier this year, the show received a Beacon Award – the industry’s highest award for public-affairs excellence, as well as a New England Cable & Telecommunications (NECTA) Award for Public Service and Excellence in Cable Television.
