From May 7 to May 9, Atlantic Avenue merchants
will lure shoppers to the strip between Hicks Street and Fourth
Avenue, with three days of sales, tastings and live music.
Among the highlights of the festival, called "May Days and
Nights," will be a wine-and-cheese grand opening party from
2 pm to 6 pm on May 8 at Home & Abroad, a home furnishings
boutique at 487 Atlantic Ave. between Third Avenue and Nevins
Street.
Partner Leticia Mulzac (pictured at left), born and raised in
Bushwick, said, "I’ve always wanted to be on Atlantic Avenue
because of the diversity here – and the name even implies traveling!
Atlantic Avenue is very much a crossroads for people."
Mulzac and her business partner, Manzar Banai, carry "mostly
Indian and Indonesian, a few Tibetan, Moroccan and West African"
furnishings and textiles, said Mulzac.
"We try to keep everything moderately priced," Mulzac
said of her "very well constructed" stock. "From
boxes to vases, it’s all made of natural materials. We have costume
jewelry, silks, velvets and a lot of cottons, and we arrange
the store so you feel like you’re in someone’s house. The way
it’s organized, there is lots to see and wander around."
The partners, who met in Malaysia, have a passion about their
work that goes beyond interior design and home décor.
"We promote various cultures in our wares," said Mulzac.
"We make distinctions between the different cultures in
Indonesia or in India."
Also at Home & Abroad, original Balinese photographs by Robert
Zarcoe will be on display (and for sale) and a 10 percent discount
will be offered on most merchandise.
