What a sweet story!

About 200 kids and adults came together to raise money for the family of a 9-year-old boy battling advanced brain cancer on June 18. Locals brought cupcakes, brownies, and donations to the John Malone Community Center to help David Omoigberai and his family with medical costs, said organizers from the Bergen Beach Youth Organization, the group that hosted the bake sale.

The event was bittersweet for pone mom, because it reminded her how the community rallied together for her own daughter — 12-year-old Alexiana DePrima — who was also diagnosed with a brain tumor two years ago.

“They did the same thing for us years ago, we as a family understand what David’s family is going through,” said mom Tania Abernovich. “When you get a devastating diagnosis like that it just pulls the carpet right out from under your feet. The outpouring of help from our community, that really helped. In a situation like that, you need all help you can get.”

The Omoigberai unfortunately was not able to make it, but is grateful for the well wishes and support, said David’s mom, Shyi.

“It was so nice,” she said.

Organizers raised more than $1,600, they said.
