More than 300 volunteers, staff and community members gathered last week for Maimonides Medical Center’s Annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon, a heartfelt celebration honoring those who dedicate their time and energy to supporting the hospital and its patients.

Held in the Borough Park hospital’s ballroom, the June 11 event paid tribute to the nearly 1,700 volunteers who collectively contributed over 200,000 hours of service in the past year. The volunteers, who come from all walks of life and all parts of Brooklyn, were praised not just for the number of hours given, but for the spirit they bring to their work.

“Your compassion, dedication, and kindness light up our hospital and bring comfort to every life you touch,” Kenneth Gibbs, president and CEO of Maimonides, told the crowd. “You remind us daily that the future of healthcare is bright — because of people like you.”

Gibbs and Executive Vice President Douglas Jablon, special assistant to the president, both spoke to the essential role volunteers play at the hospital — whether providing emotional support to patients without families, assisting staff, or simply offering a comforting presence during difficult times.

Two longtime volunteers, Helene Greene and Sandra Celentano, were awarded special recognition for their years of dedicated service. A group of student volunteers was also acknowledged, highlighting the intergenerational commitment that fuels the hospital’s volunteer force.

The afternoon event was also a moment of thanks for Alla Zats, director of volunteer and student services, whose work behind the scenes helps coordinate the hospital’s massive volunteer effort, and Cathy Cramer, CEO of Legal Information for Families Today, who was commended for her community partnership.

Addressing the volunteers, Gibbs summed up the day: “We are deeply proud and endlessly grateful to have you as part of our family,” he said. “Keep shining your light wherever you go — the world needs it.”
