Mailbox melee
Someone broke into a Metropolitan Avenue apartment building — and then broke into multiple mailboxes in the lobby — on Aug. 4.
A witness told police that he saw a man smash a window to get into the building between Olive and Catherine streets at 7 am, and saw the man run out a few minutes later.
When police arrived, they found mail scattered all over the lobby.
Money laundering
Two Humboldt Street businesses were robbed as employees were counting cash for the night on Aug. 5.
An employee of Nine Dragons Chinese food restaurant between Seigel and Moore streets was counting money behind the counter at midnight when a man came in and said, “Give me your money or I’ll kill you when you go outside.” The man then mimed a gun and the victim handed over about $300. Police arrested a suspect and recovered the money.
That same night a woman was counting cash behind the counter of a laundromat between Whipple and Bartlett streets at 8:20 pm when three rude robbers stormed the counter and grabbed about $50 right out of her hand, she told police. They fled the business and have not been found.
Hot cart
Someone managed to take off with a hot dog cart that was parked in the back of a Grand Street building on July 20 — but cops retrieved it and returned it to him.
A vendor told police he left his $6,000 cart between Graham Avenue and Humboldt Street, and his friends saw a guy with it at 6 pm. Police found the cart at a nearby scrap metal junkyard and returned it to the hot dog vendor.
Playground robbery
An opportunistic thief snatched an iPod out of a man’s hand at the Marcy Avenue playground on Aug. 5.
The victim told police he was sitting on a bench in the park between S. Ninth and Division streets at 3:40 pm, talking on his cellphone and playing with his iPod, when a jerk snatched the iPod right out of his hand.
“I’m gonna sell it,” the robber yelled as he ran off. The victim chased the man, but lost him near the corner of Marcy Avenue and Division Street.
High-class pilfer
A crook smashed the window of a car parked on S. Sixth Street on Aug. 4, and took off with the owner’s designer bags that were inside the car.
The victim told police that she parked her car near Wythe Street that night, and returned to find the driver’s-side window broken and a $350 Michael Kors bag, a $150 Dooney and Burke change wallet, and a $50 Chanel makeup bag missing.
Batty
Police arrested two women who they say tried to attack a woman with baseball bats inside a Humboldt Street building on Aug. 5.
The victim told police she entered the lobby of the building between Boerum and Seigel streets at 5:50 pm, and found the two waiting for her. The three exchanged words and one of the suspects swung her bat at the victim, shouting, “I’m going to kill you with this bat.”
The woman managed to dodge it and was not injured.
