Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge closures

Rockaway residents trying to escape Queens under cover of darkness by fleeing into the nearby paradise of Kings County will have to tough it out overnight starting Oct. 11, when Brooklyn-bound lanes on the Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge will be closed to allow for construction along the Rockaway Point Boulevard Overpass.

The closures from 11 pm to 5 am will persist through Wednesday, to allow for workers to set steel on the new overpass.

During the closure periods, north-bound traffic will detour to the Cross Bay Veteran Memorial Bridge, with the exception of the Q35 bus, which has been given a pass to operate along its normal route.

The nearly 50-year-old Rockaway Point Boulevard Overpass is being reconstructed in a project expected to cost $13.9 million, and should be ready for motorists sometime before Thanksgiving.

Whether permitting, Rockaway residents may get a reprieve from their nightly isolation during the planned closure — you can’t set steel during the rain.
