McKinley Park is shining!
Neighbors came together for a tree-lighting ceremony in the park that straddles the border between Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights on Dec. 3.
One resident who recently moved to Bay Ridge from Brooklyn Heights said she didn’t really miss the yuletide blow-out at Borough Hall, because the Ridge lighting was so spectacular.
“We were really impressed with the one at McKinley,” said Marianne Ponton. “It was so fun and festive, and the kids had such a great time.”
State Sen. Martin Golden hosted the event, which included free hot chocolate, Christmas carols, and an early visit from Santa Claus, who doled out candy canes and seated starry-eyed kids on his knee for a holiday tete-a-tete.
The concert band from IS 201 played a set of holiday tunes, but a song from a blockbuster movie stole the show.
“The kids got especially excited when they heard the song from ‘Frozen,’ ” Ponton said. “All of the kids were singing ‘Let It Go.’ ”
The oscar-winning tune — penned by a couple of Brooklyn songsmiths — struck a chord with kids, but the more staid classics resonated with adults, according to the band’s director.
“There were enough adults there to appreciate the Christmas carols,” said director John Altieri.
