St. Joseph’s College Council for the Arts announces an exhibition of the works of Brooklyn artist Meridith McNeal for the first event of its fall series.
This exhibit runs September 3-October 8 in the college’s Alumni Room Gallery, in Tuohy Hall, at 245 Clinton Avenue in Brooklyn. There will be a gallery talk with the artist September 8 at 12:40 p.m., and receptions September 15 from 5:30-8 p.m. and September 20 from 12-3 p.m. Regular gallery hours are Monday and Wednesday, 4-8 p.m. and Saturday, 12-3 p.m.
An artist, curator, educator and arts administrator based in Brooklyn, McNeal’s work is about memory and the cultural, physical and social history of a place or individuals. She often sets out to tell a particular story and selects her materials for the purpose of deepening the story as well as for the evocative quality of the medium.
In the spring of 2008, she was selected as an Artist in Residence at the American Academy in Rome. Her latest exhibition, “Magical Things,” was a product of this experience. Consisting of paintings, pictures, and hand-sewn creations, the art showcased in “Magical Things” was inspired by her daily experiences during her once-in-a-lifetime journey.
McNeal is the director of education for The Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing disadvantaged urban youth with significant exposure and access to the arts. She is a long time resident of the Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn.
