These kids are ready to ride!
Three students from Mary Queen of Heaven got to take home shiny new bicycles as part of the “Read and Ride” program, which gifts students who are vivacious readers with new two-wheelers in a campaign to both reduce childhood obesity and promote literacy. The three Mill Basin students — who out-read their other classmates — really earned their new rides, and had a great time doing it, said their pastor Father Thomas Leach from Mary Queen of Heaven Church.
“It was very good, the kids were thrilled and the parents were thrilled. The children were excited about reading — the thing that struck me, they came up to the teacher and said, ‘we are going to win, I’m going to do this, I’m going to read the most books,’ and they did,” he said. “Anything that get’s children to read is very good.”
The students can’t wait to take the bikes out for a spin — and some of the parents and teachers in the room would have liked to win one too, said the deputy grand chancellor the Knights of Pythias in Mill Basin.
“They were really excited, they were really nice bikes,” said Avery Marder. “I would have liked to get one myself.”
