As part of its silver jubilee anniversary
season, Balam Dance Theatre will perform at White Wave’s John
Ryan Theatre in DUMBO this weekend.
Balam was founded 25 years ago by choreographer and dance educator
Islene Pinder, who was later joined by Co-artistic Director Carlos
Fittante. Their contemporary dance company, which creates and
performs original works inspired by traditional Balinese theatre,
will stage three premieres in Brooklyn.
On Nov. 5 at 7 pm, Balam’s program will feature six works, including
all three premieres ("Haunting of Lady Macbeth," "Kacapi"
and "Bali-Bolero") as well as selections from its fusion
repertoire such as "Hanuman the Monkey King," known
in Bali for his strength and playful antics.
Hanuman (pictured here smelling a flower sandwiched between his
toes) is a character from the epic Hindu scripture "Ramayana,"
written by Valmiki.
On Nov. 6 at 3 pm, Balam will stage a "family show"
of seven works, which also features the premieres, "Hanuman"
and other repertoire pieces.
White Wave’s John Ryan Theatre is located at 25 Jay St.; the
entrance is on John Street. General admission tickets, available
for purchase at the door on the performance days, are $20 and
$15 for students and seniors.
