Murder Avenue
A murderer shot a man multiple times in his Vanderbilt Street home, just off Myrtle Avenue, on Oct. 18.
Cops found the victim lying face up at the back of his apartment and rushed him to the hospital at around 7:30 pm, but it was too late. Doctors said he’d died about an hour earlier.
It was the third murder recorded in the confines of the 88th Precinct this year — an area that suffered 19 such crimes as recently as 1990.
Pick paradise
A number of petty thefts plagued the neighborhood last week. Here’s a roundup:
• A thief stuck his sticky fingers into a teenage girl’s backpack and pulled out an iPod as she was walking to school on Adelphi Street at around 8 am on Oct. 14. The victim didn’t feel the pickpocket grab the digital music device from an unzipped pocket, but a witness saw the whole thing.
“Someone took something out of your backpack and then ran down that way,” said a woman, pointing down Greene Avenue where the thug was fleeing, nano in hand.
• Later that same day, a sneak slipped the watch from a woman’s wrist while both victim and felon were on a crowded B52 bus. The victim, an older woman, told cops that the perp jostled her as the Fulton Street bus was passing the corner of S. Oxford Street. He got off at around 5:30 pm, along with her gold watch — an heirloom valued at $1,000.
• The next day, another set of stealing hands grabbed a Sidekick from a woman’s pocket on Flatbush Avenue at around 1 pm. The woman was walking when the perp approached from behind and snatched the $450 mobile that was stowed in her pea coat.
Security socked
Push came to punch on Oct. 13 when a hallway altercation left a school safety attendant with a black eye.
The female security guard was scolding a 14-year-old student at the Career and Development School on Clermont Avenue. Things turned ugly at about 2 pm when the ornery girl delivered a blow to her face that was in now way minor.
