Nostrand Playground is about to get a $1.9 million makeover.
New York City Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe and Council Member Kendall Stewart joined area residents and Public School 269 students for a ground breaking ceremony at the community play pen, Nostrand and Foster avenues, which is being completely redesigned and rebuilt to resemble a garden.
Council Member Stewart secured the bulk of the money with an additional $117,000 provided by Mayor Bloomberg.
The reconstruction will include new play equipment with safety surfacing, a tot theater for “imaginative play” and decorative pavements in addition to raised planting beds with Braille labels for the visually impaired and a spray shower with floral elements.
A new path will lead through the planted area and connect to Public School 269, which is adjacent to the playground, plus an adult seating area will feature game tables, benches and landscaping.
As part of PlaNYC’s asphalt−to−turf initiative, the park’s ballfield will be converted into a multi−purpose synthetic turf field, financed by $1.5 million in mayoral funds.
