New look for Flatbush Ave.

The North Flatbush Business Improvement District will unveil 30 nylon silkscreened banners, June 22 from 9−10 a.m., all of which will be displayed on all street lampposts on Flatbush Avenue from Plaza Street to Atlantic Avenue and in front of Burrito Bar and Kitchen, at the corner of Prospect Place and Flatbush Avenue.

In February, the North Flatbush Avenue BID set out on a campaign and invited the public at large to create a new colorful design, which represents the North Flatbush Avenue district. Within a few short weeks, the BID was overwhelmed with the response as hundreds of banners came pouring into the office. The jury consisted of a committee consisting of Board of Directors as well as the sponsor for this seasons banners. The committee narrowed the submissions down to a few and then there was only one.

And the lucky first grand prize winner is Tia Johnson, who has lived in Brooklyn for 23 years and raised her family here. She has traveled through this district so many times, has seen a tremendous and wonderful change in the community, and wanted to incorporate her idea of bringing the old Flatbush neighborhood into the new era.

Johnson explains her banner design as “vintage feel with a modern look.” The committee loved her design as soon as they looked at it. Greg Yerman, owner of Burrito Bar and Kitchen, whose logo will appear on the banners, said “I love the vibrant colors and I am proud to have my restaurant affiliated with these new beautiful banners.”

At the unveiling of the new banners, the BID will award Tia with a check in the amount of $500, a gift certificate from PC Richards, a district merchant, and a gift certificate to Burrito Bar and Kitchen.

Johnson has a master’s degree in Graphic Design from Pratt Institute.
