Not ready, not there!
The command was issued by borough peaceniks, who rallied outside the National Guard recruitment office in Bay Ridge to protest the deployment to Iraq of the reserve military force, whose motto is “Always Ready, Always There.”
Organized by Peace Action New York State, marchers departed from the Bay Ridge library, 7223 Ridge Boulevard, and walked to the recruitment facility at 4th Avenue and 85th Street, where they set up a table of information and handed out anti−war literature to passers−by.
Established in 1636, the National Guard is the oldest unit of the United States Armed Forces, and among the nation’s longest−enduring institutions able to trace its history back to the earliest English colonies in North America where colonists organized their own defense by mobilizng able−bodied male citizens into militias.
