Nothing lost, nothing gained.
That’s what the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation has to say about the disappearance last week of nine fully grown trees along Dekalb Avenue, between Flatbush Avenue and Bond Street.
“We removed nine callery pear trees on Dekalb Avenue, as they were inspected and exhibited signs of past storm breakage, had a lean towards the street, and many of their branches had been previously steadied with cables to prevent additional breakages,” said Phil Abramson, a Parks spokesperson.
The removals come as part of the Fulton Mall Streetscape Improvement Project, which is being coordinated with the city’s Economic Development Corporation, a quasi public agency.
Abramson said there is green at the end of the tunnel: As part of the project, 67 new trees are being planted.
But the doomed nine were deemed to be “unlikely to survive the construction process.”
