It has been a long, exhausting work-week
filled with brief lunches and looming deadlines. The next few
weeks promise to be no different and the only thing to look forward
to is Halloween, which, frankly, you’d rather celebrate with
a proper day off than dispensing trick-or-treat candy.
To take your mind off the October grind, why not treat yourself
to a relaxing Swedish massage; an invigorating, cleansing facial;
or even that dreaded but oh-so-exciting Brazilian wax? Don’t
even think of putting it off, because this week, Oct. 16-22,
is Spa Week, when 11 Brooklyn relaxation emporiums will offer
a variety of treatments for only $50.
Spa Week started with 25 New York spas in October 2004. Since
then, the blessed phenomenon launched by Manhattan-based C&R
Media has spread to spa-loving cities throughout the country.
Of course, the draw is the $50 price tag that can get you a 75-minute
organic facial at Williamsburg’s Magnolia Beauty Spa, a 50-minute
Swedish massage with 10-minutes of foot reflexology at Spring
Thyme (which has locations in Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope),
a Titan laser treatment for the lower two-thirds of your face
at Dermacare Laser & Skincare Clinic of Brooklyn Heights,
or a 45-minute "chocolatini" body scrub at Bedford-Stuyvesant’s
Hibiscus Day Spa.
"It’s a wonderful promotion that allows clients to experience
different spas without a large expense," says Providence
Hogan of Providence Day Spa in Boerum Hill, who has participated
in Spa Week since the beginning. "In general, spas are important
because stress is one of the largest causes of disease in our
lives. And in our day and age, it’s hard to carve out the time
to take care of yourself."
For each Spa Week, the 10-year-old Providence Day Spa provides
a sampling of different treatments. This year, they are offering
a "shankara bioregenesis" (anti-aging) facial with
a choice of extractions or custom restructuring facial massage;
a bamboo body polish; and even a men’s facial with a neck massage.
All of these services will be offered at the promotional price
of $50 through Oct. 29.
Hogan says that this is the perfect season to indulge in skin
treatments.
"Your skin gets tan in the summer, so in the fall, it’s
nice to hydrate your skin, exfoliate summer tan cells and prepare
for winter," she explains.
Many other participating spas are also offering skin treatments.
At Body By Brooklyn Spa and Lounge in Clinton Hill, opened earlier
this year, customers can get a Dead Sea salt scrub with platza
treatment (beating with oak leaf branches) or " ’C’ a Difference"
anti-aging facial, normally offered for $100. Then, for an additional
fee, spa-goers can sip some cocktails in Body By Brooklyn’s modern
lounge or even stay for dinner prepared by the spa’s chef, Adriano
Rodriguez.
"People can spend the whole day relaxing and steaming and
massaging and eating as well," says Mira Goldin, who owns
the spa with her husband Alex Goldin. "We try to offer everything
in one place."
Although Body By Brooklyn’s amenities, such as a cedar sauna
or Turkish aroma steam room, are not on the $50 menu, they may
be worth a try as the Goldins modeled them after the best traditions
of spa towns in Russia, Turkey and France.
"It’s a unique concept," says Mira Goldin. "Nobody
expects to see such a place in Clinton Hill."
For a Spa Week haircut, clients can head to Bruno Salon &
Spa in Bay Ridge, which was opened in 2004 by colorist Bruno
Grillo, who has worked with the likes of Michael Douglas and
Gwyneth Paltrow. In addition to providing massages and facials
"that people in Manhattan pay $200-300 for," Bruno
Salon & Spa will offer a $50 haircut with blow dry. Here,
clients can sip complimentary wine or cappuccino while they’re
groomed, as well as peruse the high-end products that, according
to Grillo, other local spas don’t carry.
Participating in Spa Week for the first time, Grillo is not only
inviting new customers to check out his salon and spa but is
giving back to his loyal clientele.
"It’s exciting for clients that are regulars to get a massage
for $50," he says. "I feel like I’m giving them a perk."
For the perk that will complete your look, check out the Beehive
Beauty Boutique & Spa in Williamsburg, where you can not
only opt for great value treatments like the 75-minute Dermalogica
facial or the 90-minute mani-pedi on their custom wireless couch,
but also the "Fall Eye Opener," a truly hair-raising
combination of eyebrow design and tint with a choice of Brazilian
or full leg wax.
The Beehive Beauty Boutique will extend their Spa Week services
until Oct. 31, so don’t forget to treat yourself to their $50,
hour-long makeup lesson and application with mineral cosmetics
that is sure to get you looking your best for those Halloween
bashes.
