A North 1st Street resident was nearly crushed to death when his building suffered a partial collapse, officials said this week.
Karl Friedrich was reportedly inside his third floor apartment June 2 when the walls began cracking apart, giving way under the weight of a fresh load of concrete being poured at a construction site next door.
While surprised, Friedrich managed to escape his building, located near Kent Avenue, without sustaining any serious injury.
Investigators determined that the wall could not sustain the weight of wet concrete being used to create a wall for the new condo project next door.
Residents were removed from the building and work at the construction site was halted while the Department of Buildings conducted an investigation, officials said.
The investigation was still underway as this paper went to press.
