Fishing — there’s netting to it!

Families tried their hand at seining — fishing with a net — with the Urban Park Rangers at the Marine Park estuary on May 10.

One mother who attended the event with her son to celebrate Mother’s Day said there was no catch to the free, family-friendly event that took place just off Avenue U and Burnett Street.

“It was a really great experience,” said Sheryl Stevens, adding that it was an ideal way to spend the special day with her son, Ruben. “It was a really fun thing for us to do on Mother’s Day.”

Parks Department Urban Park Rangers Angela Phillips and Lena Lam showed the families how the use the nets to catch fish — and other cold-blooded creatures, including snails — then release them back into the water.

Like fish in a school, Stevens said the attendees learned a lot from the seining session — and the whole day really made a splash with her family.

“It was really educational,” she said. “We didn’t realize there was so much wildlife there.”
