The Cinema Kings Highway is not just for adult films anymore!
It’s a little-known fact that the porn theater hiding in plain sight on Kings Highway between E. Seventh and E. Eighth streets in Midwood also shows some of Hollywood’s greatest works of art.
For just $12, the discerning filmophile can eschew the grindhouse’s downstairs offerings — which feature such porn classics as “You’ve Got Male” and “Ocean’s 11 Inches” — and take in a more highbrow affair at the larger, top-shelf theater upstairs where classics like “The Godfather” routinely play.
Here’s a breakdown of what’s been on the silver screen at the former Art Deco “Jewel Theatre” during the past month:
Papillon
(Nov. 23–28)
Steve McQueen stars as a petty criminal wrongly convicted of murder who is determined to escape a dreadful prison island in the Oscar-nominated 1973 classic.
The Organization
(Nov. 28–Dec. 6)
A rogue cop played by Sidney Poitier tries to help a group of young revolutionaries who’ve been framed for murder in the 1971 drama.
Under Siege
(Dec.7–11)
A gang of nuclear mercenaries try to seize control of the battleship Missouri and the only one who can stop them is Casey Ryback, a former Navy SEAL played by Steven Seagal in the classic action flick from 1992.
Commando
(Dec. 7–12)
Arnold Schwarzenegger plays John Matrix, a retired special agent who’s forced out of retirement after a band of thugs kidnaps his daughter — with revenge in mind — in the 1985 thriller that features a breakout performance by Alyssa Milano.— Alfred Ng
