Olympic spirit burns bright at the John Malone Center

Tomorrow’s athletes got a jump start on sportsmanship today during a junior Olympic skills competition at the John Malone Center.

Children ages 8 to 13 locked friendly horns and showcased their abilities in basketball, soccer, tennis and track and field at the community facility, 2303 Bergen Avenue.

The winners were: Kenny Bonhome, Public School 115, 1500 East 92nd Street; Barry Emmanuel, Josha Guiterrez and Samantha Mathews, Public School 222, 3301 Quentin Road; Neal Gidden, Wendsline Janvier, Branden Rutherford, Damanya Evans, Public School 203, 5101 Avenue M; Amanda Gil and Dylan Hall, Public School 207, 4011 Fillmore Avenue; Camera Baker, Sasha Mata, Ruggiany Georges and Steven Prinston, Public School 119, 3829 Avenue K; Netanya Rogers, Dianna Bersky, Shakeem Correnthi, Yaying Zhang and Helen Aftar, Public School 255, 1866 East 17th Street; and Christine Edwards, Public School 251, 1037 East 54th Street.

The schools for winners Kheron Brown and Naje Morgan were unavailable.

The qualifiers will advance to a regional contest at the John Malone Center on June 21. Semi-finalists will participate in the National Finals in Chicago, Illinois, presented by the United States Olympic Committee, July 24-July 26.
