One-day exhibit of Biblical law

“The 613” — an unprecedented 1,700 square-foot work of art depicting the Judaic principles of Biblical Law — will be on display for one day only, May 18 from 12-4 p.m. at a warehouse in the Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn. Conceived and painted by Archie Rand, the CUNY Presidential Professor of Art at Brooklyn College, the piece is derived from the text of The Torah. All 613 Commandments have been transformed into vivid images — each, on its own 20” x 16” canvas. The individual canvases, painted in a style reminiscent of 1950s comics and pulp novels, make up one painting, 15 feet high and 93 feet wide. A reference guide listing the commandments will be available to those who attend. Rand, one of America’s foremost painters whose art is represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, The Bibliotheque Nationale of Paris, The Israel Museum of Jerusalem, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, will be on hand to discuss the significance of the piece. The warehouse is located at 392 Classon Avenue on the corner of Classon and Lexington avenues. The viewing is free and open to the public.
