To The Editor:
I am a resident of Williamsburg. I am a little tired of picking up a copy of your paper and all I seem, to read about are artists who cant find a suitable place to work, or about McCarren Pool which, by the way, my father helped build, back when there was no work and where I grew up enjoying every summer day and night when I could cool off. I lived directly across the street. At that time the rent was about $60 a month.
Now, you have to rob a bank to live in this neighborhood. Let’s start writing about people, who have lived here all their lives, and can’t live and possibly grow old and die in their own neighborhood.
Now people from all over the country come to Greenpoint. Most are being subsidized by their loving parents, regardless of what the rent might be. So let’s find affordable housing for lifetime residents and lets not worry about artists, rock bands, and any other oddball excuse for a story.
How about this for a idea: For every bleeding heart non-New Yorker you write about, you find affordable housing for five misplaced Brooklynites, like myself.
Unless I get three jobs and by the way I am educated there is no way I could afford these rents that up until about eight years ago were do-able. I need to live where I was born and raised not somewhere else.
So, start your crusade whenever your ready.
