State Senator Martin J. Golden hosted his seventh annual series of senior fairs to offer local seniors and their families an opportunity to learn of the services available to assist them with their property taxes, their prescription drug coverage, their personal safety, and their health.
More than 1,500 senior citizens of the district attended the fairs, held at St. Patrick’s, 9511 Fourth Avenue; St. Columba, 2245 Kimball Street; and Most Precious Blood, 70 Bay 47th Street.
Each event featured information and assistance offered by various city agencies including the New York City Department for the Aging, the Department of Environmental Protection, the Department of Sanitation, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the Fire Department, New York City Police Department and the EPIC Program among other agencies. Free blood pressure screenings were also made possible by Coney Island Hospital.
Golden discussed the increase in the SCRIE eligibility limit to $29,000 this year and reminded those in attendance of his efforts to see Granny’s Law become a reality here in New York State to protect seniors from incidents of crime. He also spoke of the recent committee passage of the Caregiver’s Assistance Act which will give financial relief to family members who care for senior relatives in their homes.
