National songs, a moment of silence and a giant flag marked the memorial as Public School 255 students recalled the supreme sacrifices of 9/11 victims with a pomp-filled outdoor ceremony.
Pint-sized patriots and their teachers joined solemn forces in the schoolyard, 1866 East 17th Street, to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the World Trade Center terror attacks with written and spoken word eulogies, while across the East River Mayor Michael Bloomberg led the first of four silences at Ground Zero to mark the moments when the hijackers struck the Twin Towers and the moments of their collapse.
The program featured a guest address by World War II veteran and Purple Heart recipient Bernard Rothenberg, and a super-sized ‘community flag,’ ceremoniously unfurled by students.
Youngsters also placed a roses in a ‘bouquet of peace’ to remember all those, who perished and those who still remain missing.
The memorial was a way of “involving all the children in our school in a meaningful way,” said a school spokesperson.
