The faithful flocked to the streets to hail their Blessed Mother as the Catholic Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel got underway in Bergen Beach with a street procession.
Worshippers stepped in line behind a parish consortium from St. Bernard’s Church, which transported an elaborate statue of the Mary Madonna along East 69th Street and Veteran’s Avenue.
The holy march was part of a four-day street spectacle, sponsored by the Gioiosa Marina Social Club, to honor the patron saint.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a title given to Mary, the mother of Jesus, in honor of her having presented the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel to Saint Simon Stock.
