Time to break out the popcorn and cracker jacks!
The next generation of Brooklyn Cyclones played their first game to kick off spring season on April 2 in Sheepshead Bay, and celebrated the 61st year of Kings Bay Baseball. Kings Bay’s 11–12-year-olds lost in a nail-biter, but the score didn’t matter — it was a beautiful day to play ball, said the president of the league.
“It was great, we had a nice turnout,” said Anthony Georgopoulos. “It was a gorgeous day out.”
Players, parents, and coaches paraded through the streets to the field on Coyle Street and Voorhies Avenue, led by a marching band and local celebrity, Sandy the Seagull — mascot of the Brooklyn Cyclones. Kings Bay lost to Brooklyn Baseball Association 4–3 in the last inning, but the kids all had a blast, said coach Rene Merida.
“The kids all had a great time, they had fun in the parade all the way to the end, cheering on other teams,” said Merida, who lives in Sheepshead Bay. “It’s a lot of companionship, a lot of friendships.”
And Councilman Chaim Deutsch (D–Sheepshead Bay) hurled the ball over home plate to kick off the game. He had quite an arm, said Merida.
“The Councilman’s pitch was good, he could play with the 12-year-olds if he wanted,” he said.
