Give into that irresistible force that is (or should be) drawing
you to Magnetic Field tonight (Saturday, April 10), to see a
raucous show by Boston-based mod rockers, The Pills, who no doubt
will be rolling into Brooklyn Heights with copies of their third
and latest LP "A Fistful of Pills" (Primary Voltage
Records) in hand.
The Pills are (left to right) David Thompson (guitar, vocals);
Dave Aaronoff (guitar, keyboards, vocals), formerly of the Mighty
Mighty Bosstones; Corin Ashley (bass, vocals); and Jamie Vavra
(drums).
Some critics have likened the quartet’s amphetamine pop to The
Strokes and The White Stripes, while other critics lament that
it should have been The Pills – popping since 1995 – getting
all the attention.
The band’s lyrics answer their euphoria-inducing sound with occasional
wistfulness and more frequent wit and sarcasm. In one of the
few slow-paced songs, "Kissing the Dirt," a groovy
paean to paranoia, they write, "When the Geiger counter
dances, I’m not taking any chances – I’ll be safe beneath my
desk." And if you really get hooked, the CD also has sheet
music so you can "play along with The Pills."
Surely, a live show of The Pills’ infectious, head-bopping tunes
will be the tonic for anything that ails you.
Brooklyn’s own The Strip Minors will open the show, which kicks
