Police Blotter

A crew of Orthodox peace-keepers helped save a Flatbush house of worship from being victimized when they assisted in the arrest of a man allegedly trying to cash bogus checks in the church’s name.

Shomrim Patrol members told cops last week of the location of a man accused of writing three phony checks in the name of Our Lady of Refuge Church at Foster and Ocean Avenues.

Officials said that the Shomrim were rolling around Midwood when an employee from Dependable Check Cashing on Avenue J came up to them, claiming that someone had just tried to cash a fake check for $871.45.

The employee said that the man, later identified as Wajid Hussain, 23, was sent packing, but was seen allegedly trying to cash the check at a nearby Chase Bank.

Shomrim members patrolled the area with the check cashing employee, finding Hussain entering another Chase Bank, this one on Coney Island Avenue.

They then called police, who apprehended Hussain on charges of criminal possession of a forged instrument and attempted petit larceny.

Officials alleged that Hussain had three phony checks in the church’s name on him when he was taken into custody.
