Two Bensonhurst schools want to form a partnership.
The principals of P.S. 128, 2075 84th Street, and I.S. 690 Brooklyn Studio Secondary School, 8310 21st Avenue, attended a meeting of School District 21’s Community Education Council (CEC) to seek the group’s support of its plan.
“P.S. 128 would like to officially be the feeder school to I.S. 690,” explained CEC President Yoketing Eng.
P.S. 128 Principal Marcia Robins said, “P.S. 128 is unofficially the zoned school for [Brooklyn Studio].”
However, changes to the admissions process for District 21 middle schools led P.S. 128 parents to believe that their children could not attend Brooklyn Studio.
“Our parents were very confused last year,” P.S. 128 Principal Marcia Robins said. “We’re trying to help our parents and our partner so [Brooklyn Studio] doesn’t have 45 empty seats and we don’t have parents saying, ‘Why can’t my kids go there?’”
“We want to make sure that any parent from P.S. 128 who wants their child to come to Brooklyn Studio School has no problem with that,” said Brooklyn Studio Principal Martin Fiasconaro.
A partnership between the two schools makes sense, the principals say.
“We’re attached by a wall and we share a backyard. We’re really one building,” Robins said.
This is just the beginning of the process to alter the zoning for both schools.
“The next step would be to hold a meeting at 128 to solicit comments from parents,” Eng explained.
After that, the city Department of Education (DOE) would study the issue and then present a rezoning proposal for the CEC to approve.
