A week after the powers that be broke the news to Carroll Gardens residents that not only were they not getting a new post office, they would be losing supplemental postal service as well, new word has come that some much needed service is being restored to the community after all.
The United States Postal Service says that a mobile outlet will return to the Eileen C. Dugan Senior Center at 380 Court Street beginning October 3.
According to Andrea Burrows, customer relations coordinator, Brooklyn Customer Services, a clerk will be on hand from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to handle rudimentary postal services.
The supplementary service will only be available once a month, however, but USPS officials say that if enough revenue is generated, hours of operation could be extended.
While the effort does not begin to address the real need in the community, some say that it’s a start and that they are happy to get some measure of relief.
In the past, postal service at the Eileen C. Dugan Senior Center has been sporadic at best, often because clerks calling in sick were not replaceable.
USPS officials say that available will continue to shift depending on the needs of the Cadman Plaza Post Office and other factors.
