Pop quiz: You know it is spring in Park Slope when: a) the snow melts b) you spot the first daffodil or c) there are thousands of kids in baseball uniform marching up Seventh Avenue?
If you answered “c” then you must have seen the 13th Annual Prospect Park Baseball Association Opening Day Parade last Saturday.
The parade is the largest Little League march in New York City, with more than 2,000 children as well as many coaches and parents keeping in step.
The parade stepped off from Carroll Street and Seventh Avenue at 10 am with Mr. Met and Sandy the Seagull from the Brooklyn Cyclones leading the way— a perfect way to catch your first case of baseball fever.
The parade turned up Ninth Street and emptied into Prospect Park, where Brooklyn Borough President Markowitz, City Councilman Bill DeBlasio and Rep. Anthony Weiner (D–Sheepshead Bay, though a Park Slope native) ushered in the coming season and threw out the first pitch after the crowd sang “Take me out to the ball game.”
Opening day for the major leagues may have star power and glitz, but in Park Slope the Brooklyn opening day was buzzing with excitement as the kids prepared to take their first swings of the new season.
