Hundreds of National Dance Institute (NDI) schoolchildren from PS 235 performed in their end-of-year performance, “Celebrating Mexico,” a culmination of the dancers’ year-long study of the richness of Mexican history, culture, and art, realized in dance and music.
Founded by Jacques d’Amboise, NDI provides a comprehensive 32-week In-School Program impacting 25,000 children. At the performance, NDI accepted a $10,000 grant from the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust.
PS 235, 525 Lenox Road, is one of NDI’s largest In-School Programs, and has a proud history of academic success. It is ranked among the top 10 percent of city schools due to its high reading and math scores. The PS 235 community is largely West Indian, and the students celebrate and honor their rich cultural tradition and heritage.
The school emphasizes traditional values, requiring students to wear uniforms, introducing them to the classics of literature, and encouraging them to conduct themselves with dignity and decorum. The families of students show great support for the NDI program and take immense pride in the dancers’ accomplishments.
