When Public School 153 first opened in 1909, a loaf of bread cost four cents, the national population was 90,490,000, New York Harbor had yet to be graced with the Statue of Liberty and the average American income was less than $1,000 a year.
Most of that has changed but the elementary school, originally known as the Homecrest School of Music, “is still going strong.”
Students and faculty joined festive forces with community residents to hail its 100th anniversary with a celebration, featuring assembly programs throughout the day, accompanied by a large iced cake and honorary diplomas for attending alumni.
As part of its continuing centennial celebration, Public School 153 will hold memory tours for alumni and parents and past faculty, March 25 at 5:30 p.m.
