It was a color-aborative effort.
More than 75 students at PS 253 sang, danced, and emoted their way through the Brighton Beach school’s annual spring show, “Technicolor Heroes,” on June 11.
Technically, the show was a joint-venture among the music, dance, and theater departments, but members from all over the school community collaborated, an organizer said.
“It takes a village, and everybody jumped in,” said music teacher Adria Francani, who led the production with dance teacher Andrea Provvisiero and theater instructor Elisia Francani. “Teachers, paraprofessionals, and aids helped when they could. The art club made props. We’ve had performances like this at the school, but they’ve never been to this level of collaboration.”
The production told the story of seven alien races — each corresponding to a different hue — who vied to re-color the Earth after everything on the planet went gray, said Francani, who wrote the script.
As they argued over who would get to paint the planet in their image, the races threw down in parodic song and dance battles to prove their mettle. Students dressed as red aliens sang Taylor Swift’s “The Color Red,” and little green men and women sang “It’s Gonna Be Green” — a parody of the ’NSync song “It’s Gonna Be Me,” Francani said.
Francani credited the school’s principle for enthusiastically supporting the production.
“As a performing arts department, we feel honored to work at our school because of our fabulous principal, Lisa Speroni,” she said. “She’s the reason we’re able to make these shows happen.”
