A fisherman snagged a flying seagull while casting his rod into Sheepshead Bay, but quickly freed the fowl — apparently without injuring it — on Oct. 3. It was a traumatic experience for the few who were gathered around and witnessed the bird’s pain, but as soon as the experienced angler felt a stronger-than-normal tug on his line, he jumped to his feet to rescue the little fellow and even assured the bird it would make it out alive.

“Oh s—! You come, you come, no problem. I can help you, okay?” the fisherman cooed to the gull as he untangled its wing.

And it may have been my fault! The man was distracted while I interviewed him for an article, and I feel a sense of responsibility for causing the mishap.

As the owner of a 10-year-old parrot, I was too paralyzed with fear to help — or even get the angler’s full name — but luckily, a do-gooder walking by didn’t hesitate to lend a hand, and after a few frightful minutes, the seagull flew free.
