Assemblywoman Joan Millman organized a free osteoporosis screening in her Brooklyn office, 341 Smith Street, with the help of Long Island College Hospital of Brooklyn.
Local residents were able to get results of the screening in less than five minutes using a machine, which measures density in the bones of the foot. The test is especially recommended for women over the age of 65.
While many health insurers and Medicare usually cover one screening every two years, this free event helped fill the gap for many residents wishing to monitor their health.
“This test is quick, painless and extremely valuable for those individuals that might be at risk for osteoporosis,” Millman stated. “I am grateful that Long Island College Hospital was able to make this test available free of charge to my constituents. Just as we regularly monitor our cholesterol and blood pressure, it is important also to be aware of our bone health.”
